The Annual General Meeting of the ARP took place on Monday 23rd June at the New Cavendish Club in London. The date for the AGM has been changed. In previous years, we have run the AGM alongside the Christmas lunch, but in order to more accurately report to the members on the publishing of the annual accounts, it makes more sense that the AGM takes place closer to the association’s year end.

House prices have risen almost twice as fast as earnings since 1990, and by 2007 mortgage costs for first time buyers, on average, represented 34.5% of individual full time earnings; slightly higher than in 1990 at the peak of the last housing market boom.

Since I last wrote an article for Point2Point, I’m sure we’ve all wondered if some of the disastrous news that the Press love to scare us with, would affect our industry in real terms. A few people I’ve spoken to recently seem to believe that it has had little effect so far and organisations are continuing their policy of having a mobile and effective workforce. In my view this could change if times become really difficult in terms of cost-cutting.

Employees of the Health and Safety Executive’s London HQ recently staged a protest following the decision to close the office and move the jobs to Bootle. This followed a report from the Department of Works and Pensions which concluded that the proposed move could lead to a “huge loss” of experienced staff not willing to relocate. Quelle surprise!

The US Visa Waiver programme, which allows visitors from Western Europe and Japan to make short visits to the States without the need for a Visa, will be changed from January 1st 2009. The changes are being implemented by US Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff.
“The US is to tighten visa restrictions to allow it to screen all short-term visitors from Japan and Western Europe."
